This world is nothing like the one you know.
A hundred years ago, the vampires publicly admitted their existence to the unsuspecting world around them. For a while, tensions were high between the vampires and the humans. Humans were killing the vampires out of fear of their safety. Once it was established that a majority of vampires would not kill to feed and could survive off of bag blood or animals (neither is very delicious or filling), the humans relaxed somewhat. Many of the people who are bitten are donors, willing participants who enjoy the pleasure caused by being bit. Now, the vampires are pretty much the norm for every area of the world. Their numbers are much higher than the humans would ever have expected, but for the most part they live peacefully with the humans in the open. There are, of course, those who do not view their food as equal, but the vampires do a good job policing their own. Now, vampires are required to register their existence with the human government. Fifty years ago, humans just like you and I came together to admit that they were not as we thought. Your neighbors, brothers, sisters, friends and lovers admit theat they are not as human as you would believe. They had gifts that allowed them to stand out from the average person. It caused a bit of panic and hysteria. What were these gifts? What had caused them? And more importantly, how could the average person protect against these gifts? It made it hard to trust anybody. People everywhere were suspicious of everyone else and more than once it turned violent. Fights would break out on the streets, police would arrest those suspected of being "carriers", those who had abilities or carried the genetic quirk to allow them to exist. Scientists would study large groups of these people and finally established that their powers were not a threat to society. After nearly a decade of chaos, the confusion finally died down well enough to let people go back to their normal lives, though they were required to register with the government as having powers so they could be monitored.
Two years ago. Just in case the poor world hadn't gone through enough, a new group emerged. They were the shapeshifters. Most people were not willing to believe that werewolves were real, but after everything else they knew, it really wasn't such a far stretch. Not only wolves, but foxes, leopards, tigers, and a few other animals. Most of these people could only take on the form of one animal, but a few wildcards could change into numerous animals. None could change their human appearance and after everything else that had happened, they were accepted in stride and with little complaint. The human government set down rules for the shifters, much like the other groups, and they went about their daily lives with little change. The other groups thought they got off a bit light, but as long as the world was at peace there was little to be concerned with.
Five months ago, the United Nations announced a world-wide epidemic. Scientists who were genetically altering the DNA structure of potatoes in order to combat the world’s food shortages accidentally created a new super-virus that was immune to all medical treatment. The world lived in fear of their food sources. Naturally their panic turned to the Otherworlders, blaming them for what happened. Scientists are working night and day to find a cure for the disease. Vampires are also working towards a cure, as it is cutting into their food supply. People are getting nervous, and that is never a good thing. Tensions were already high between humans and Otherworlders; will this be the final straw? You never know what can happen these days. Are you ready to step outside and face the strange new world?
